LEGENDS RETOLD · VOLUME ONE

The Rise of

King Arthur

From the darkest age of Britain, a boy emerged, born in secrecy. Discover how he drew the sword from the stone, and how a kingdom rose from chaos.

The Rise of King Arthur offers the original legends in unsimplified form — infused with the inner lives of characters and told with the depth and clarity they deserve. Based on Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur, this retelling preserves the original plots while adding meaningful story arcs and the narrative flow contemporary readers love.

"Who is that?"

Arthur whispered.

From The Rise of King Arthur · Chapter: Excalibur

As if conjured by the mist, a lady emerged over the lake's surface. Her pale blue dress rippled in the breeze, her hair blowing softly. She set out toward them, her feet barely touching the water's surface, leaving tiny circles where she stepped.

Arthur stood watching, mesmerised.

"Who is that?" he whispered.

"The Lady of the Lake," Merlin replied. "She has her palace at the bottom of this lake. It is a place of enchantment and wonder that no living person has ever seen. In her possession is a sword like no other."

AUTHOR - MYTHOLOGY, LEGENDS RETELLING

SONIA SOUCEK

I retell myths, legends, and fairy tales, with the original cunning, darkness, and wonder left in. I write both in Czech and English.

As a reader, I enjoy mythology, historical novels, literary fiction, and fantasy. My favorite authors are: J.R.R. Tolkien, Ursula K. Le Guin, Ray Bradbury, Karel Čapek, John Steinbeck, and many others. I am always finding new ones...

I’ve recently finished the retellings of Arthurian legends: The Rise of King Arthur. Working on the stories about Koschei the Deathless and Baba Yaga.

This retold Arthurian legend deals with both the well-known story parts and reveals some hidden or long-forgotten plots. The colorful scene descriptions and the dynamic flow prove the author's true skills. No one gets bored reading the fascinating tales of Igraine, Uther Pendragon, Merlin the Wizard, King Arthur, Morgana, or the very famous Excalibur sword. The engaging style makes the story irresistible, and you won't put it down until you've read it all.

"I've read several Arthurian retellings, and these are the first that made me care about these people as people, not just legendary figures."
